Fried Hair

Description:

Fried hair can result from the hair being exposed to heat for too long during the chemical processes such as perming, relaxing and bleaching.  During these processes, the hair is very fragile as the outer protective layer of cuticles has been raised slightly to allow the chemicals access to the inner cortex so that reactions can occur to change the hair.  In consequence of this fragility, over-exposure to heat can have unfortunate consequences.

Symptoms:

Split-ends

Frizzy hair

Breakage

Dry hair

Over-porous hair

Dull hair

Difficult to manage

Causes:

Harsh chemicals used in perms, relaxers and colouring.

Excessive use of styling products

Exposure to the sun and wind

Excessive use of heating appliances such as rollers, curlers, flat irons and hair dryers

Treatments:

Fried hair has been so extensively damaged that it cannot return to its original state. However, there are a few options to help remedy if not solve the problem:

  • Hair PictureCut off or trim the parts that are fried. Since hair cannot repair itself as it is technically dead you have to wait for it to grow out or cut it off.
  • During the time the hair is growing back, or if there is a reluctance to cut off all of the hair, use clip on hair extensions to hide the damage until it grows out and can be cut off.
  • While the hair is recovering, avoid using shampoo too often as chemicals in both the water and any shampoo will only cause further damage.
  • Deep condition the hair as this will provide moisture and make hair easier to detangle which would otherwise further weaken hair.
  • Try to allow the hair to air dry and don’t use a hair dryer.
  • Try to avoid products that contain alcohol or silicon as these tend to build up in the hair making it frizzy and weaken it further.
  • Wear sun protection in the hair to protect hair follicles (pits in the scalp out of which hairs grow) and hair colour so that it doesn’t fade.
  • Drink plenty of water to keep the scalp hydrated and prevent the hair becoming dry.
