Hair and scalp problems

Hair PictureIn an ideal world, our hair would look beautiful all of the time. Hair is the most obvious and immediate way to present an individual’s image and identity, and many see it as their crowning glory. Despite this, we treat our hair with a lot of disrespect subjecting it to treatment that is full of dangers and creating styles that are damaging to its condition.

Hair treatments can lead to the following skin and scalp conditions:

Treatments can also damage the hair itself. Many of the following problems to the hair are caused by oxidation due to environmental factors and/or the use of harsh chemicals in perming, straightening and relaxing processes that cause hair to become over processed.  The outer layers of hairs are broken away by oxidising agents through the cuticles and the cortex to the inner layers exposing the hair shaft which is delicate and easily damaged.  These include the following:

In more complicated hair treatments such as perming, relaxing or colouring, there can be more serious problems if they go wrong or are not done correctly. These problems include:

All the problems listed above are explained in more detail on their designated pages.

Problems from Perming

Perming your hair can:

  • Lift your hair colour
  • Cause scalp irritation and itching.
  • Cause breakage and dryness due to over-processing.
  • Cause rashes and sensitivity
  • Produce an odour from the chemicals
  • Leave a purple residue because the solution bonds with oxidised iron, which will affect the results.

To try to cure this you could use a product containing Vitamins C and E or use an EC Mode Waves perm which uses bromate instead of the peroxide neutralizer. Bromate is gentler and although it takes a few minutes longer it processes 100% of your hair while peroxide only does 80%, this means you can shampoo immediately. In addition, there is no odour produced nor does it lift any colour.

Problems from Chemical Straightening

The process of chemical straightening can cause:

  • Breakage
  • Itching
  • Flaking
  • Redness
  • Sensitivity
  • Dryness
  • Lack of shine
  • Your hair to be over-processed.

Again using a product containing Vitamins C and E will help prevent oxidation.

Problems from Styling

Using an excessive amount of styling products when you are trying to improve your hair will not help and may even cause more problems with product build-up. Product build-up can also be caused by hard water and mineral build-up.

The symptoms of product build-up include:

  • Lack of shine
  • Hair is weighed down
  • Hair is rough or dry
  • It is difficult to comb
  • It is sticky and too full
  • Processes such as perming and relaxing do not properly process because the build up blocks the chemicals.
